Antheia waited for 4 months to have surgery for a cleft lip, a charity working to help in such cases was going to cover the surgery, but because of the crisis the charity stopped all surgeries indefinitely. This type of surgery is best done in the early months of birth, so waiting longer could bring further issues. Parents raised funds to cover part of it, the hospital also reduced the cost and Project 189 was able to find 5 sponsors to cover the rest. Antheia has had a successful surgery and is already drinking milk. Parents have been very strong and remain strong now for the recovery.

We are looking for a sponsor for Vanessa to help her be repatriated. We have been working with the embassy of the Philippines but the flights will be stoping soon and we are not sure if she can make it. The latest she can fly is August 15th so we have only a small window of time. Her country is Philippines and the ticket costs 817USD. We would love to see her go home, staying will make her go in debt with the hospital and will not be able to leave until her hospital bill is paid. She is having a baby boy. UPDATE: we are re-evaluating how to help her best. She has not been able to travel back to her country. Aminah needs to fly out on the 18th to Uganda! She is 29 weeks pregnant and we are looking for one or two sponsors to pay her ticket to Uganda and her COVID test required to travel. Flights to Uganda are only those approved by the Ugandan government so luckily she just got the call and has only few days to buy the ticket and take the test. Aminah and her husband were working but both were terminated and unable to pay rent, basic needs and let alone hospitals to give birth in their host country. We need to get her home to be able to give birth and not have to carry a heavy financial burden that brings other issues, such as obtaining birth certificates. The ticket to Uganda is 485USD and her COVID test is 95USD. The flight is scheduled for the 18th. Hoping that we can send her home! No, it is not just a picture of ladies shopping. It is an initiative that has turned into an #empowerment project. Together with our donor organization we were able to provide #migrantworkers a gift card where they would be able to shop with whatever they needed. Because of the current movement restrictions we had to make sure that we could reach those workers who were living together to have the biggest impact. And it worked better than we thought! This women did not receive from us what we think their needs were. We trusted them, and they got what was really needed, and not something prescribed from the outside. That what they need, many times is more than just food, such as soap, something crucial for today’s normal. This picture is of this group of migrant workers who have had no means to get food, who live together, who organized among themselves and who we trust. Mesay

Mesay is on her way home to Ethiopia!!! After weeks of work, together with our partner and sponsor we finally got to see her fly home! 

Mesay’s situation is one of those that because it is so difficult, most would have not tried. But we are truly grateful to be working with such partners on the ground to make it happen.

Mesay was living 2 hours away from any main city, with no passport, pregnant and with no money left. We managed to get her a passport, transportation to her embassy, doctor check up, flight ticket, COVID test for flying, cancelling her visa, fingerprints and getting to the airport with internal closed borders. The repatriation flight to the Philippines costs 817USD. In March she was terminated from her job and her employer did not provide her with her return ticket to go home. With the flights grounded and slowing down of repatriation from the embassy, things are becoming more challenging. Expectant mothers staying in the host country to give birth brings many challenges. Most of them do not have insurance as they have been terminated. With a large hospital bill it will make it difficult to raise the funds without a job. And as long as there is a pending hospital bill the baby will not receive a birth certificate. For the last weeks we have been trying to cover this cost and the parents have been working with the hospital to find solutions, and now this community has stepped up and provided this amazing support! Thank you Akira’s sponsor 🙏 We lost Akira Yzzael few days before she was born. It is one of our hardest cases. She was to be born on July 19th. Few days before she was to be born her mother did not feel her move and needed to be checked. But she did not have the money needed and we were not able to raise the amount on time. When she made it to the hospital unfortunately it was too late. Her mother unfortunately was not able to have any of her regular check ups do to financial difficulties. Malindu Himasara was born on August 20th. His parents are both from Sri Lanka and like all new parents are doing their best to welcome him to this world. She gave birth in a hospital and was not able to pay the bill (as so many currently cannot) but the hospital took her passport and requested a cheque in order for her to be released from the hospital. The cheque is going to be cashed in on September 9th. If it is cashed in and there are no funds, a court file will be open against them, and a fine will be given!!. He already tried to extend the date for the cheque but the hospital has refused. So we have a limited time to mobilize! Her husband has lost his job, and has been doing manual jobs to get by, making partitions, cleaning gardens and painting. But this only helps to get by. Hoping to mobilize our community and beyond to help them before September 9th. Arrow was born with Pierre robin syndrome, meaning that there is a triad of cleft palate, tongue falling blocking the airway and the chin was recessed. She will turn 1 in three days and her deadline to have her last surgery for her cleft palate to be reclosed is at the end of this month. When she was born, they received support from a foundation, but they have slowed down the support due to the current crisis and have not received a follow up reply. Jessica, her mother, left her job as a nurse to completely take care of her and be able to feed her as her situation was delicate. Alhamdullila she is healthy now and only requires the cleft palate surgery. The doctor that has taken care of Arrow since she was born was able to find another hospital where he can do the same surgery at less than half price. Red Crescent is repatriating his mother, but not him because he does not meet the requirements needed to be repatriated by the Red Crescent. Thirdy is 5 years old and won’t be able to wait alone until we get a flight for home, most likely the mother will have to decline the ticket. His father is already in the Philippines so he does not have anyone there except his mother. It is not common for only parents to be repatriated without their children, but with the current crisis things are a bit more chaotic and unfortunately this can happen.
